What is the reception year like at Hampton Vale?

We have three classes in Reception: London, Edinburgh and Cardiff. Each class has a teacher and teaching assistant who prioritise getting to know every child in their class by forming nurturing and responsive relationships to ensure all pupils meet their full potential.

Our innovative and bespoke reception curriculum supports all pupils to learn and develop across the seven early years areas: communication & language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development; literacy; mathematics; understanding the world and expressive arts and design. In the mornings your child will have daily phonics, maths and writing sessions, and in the afternoon your child will have the opportunity to learn through play in our continuous and enhanced learning sessions. The afternoon learning provides learning opportunities for all of the seven areas through carefully planned learning activities in our well designed environments. These learning activities include provision in our beautiful early years garden - Hampton Village. Your reception child will also have the opportunity to take part in Forest School, PE, Art, Performing Arts and Music lessons - all taught by subject specialists.

Our recent OfSTED report highlighted these areas of our early years practice:

‘Pupils love attending Hampton Vale.’

‘Children in early years are equally happy and safe.’

‘From the early years, pupils behave extremely well.’

‘A well-designed curriculum ensures that children, from the early years, learn about staying safe online and offline.’

How do we support transition to reception?

During the summer term before your child starts school, we spend time getting to know our new pupils and their families. The first part of this process is gathering all key information from your child’s information pack, including an ‘All About Me’ document about your child. We then liaise with your child’s current nursery or childcare provider so that we understand their current stages of development. After this part of the process we then organise the children into classes so that new pupils and their parents/carers can be invited to class stay and play sessions in June. Within these sessions you and your child can meet their new teachers, play in their new classroom and meet the other children that will be in their class!

What support is available for my child with Special Educational Needs?

We have a school inclusion team, lead by our SENCo Mrs. Lartey, who will be able to tailor your child’s transition into reception based upon their need. Once we are aware of your child’s specific needs we will put a plan in place alongside you to ensure your child is well supported and their needs are met. If you would like more information regarding this please don’t hesitate to contact our school office.

What Do I Need to Do Now?

In addition to reading our school website, we also recommend that you read our latest school OfSTED report. If you have any further questions or you would now like to book a prospective parent tour please contact our school office. We look forward to welcoming you and your child soon into our school.
